OPC-sponsored facility at Emanuel Special School nears completion

Despite the delay caused by the pandemic, Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) announced that the construction of a new facility at the Emanuel Special School is 98 percent complete as of July.

OPC invested USD660,000 to build the facility which is designed to provide the best learning conditions to more than 110 children with disability–a number that OPC hopes will decrease in the medium and long term.  The new facility will have ramps for wheelchair access, as well as special desks, a cafeteria, fully furnished bathrooms, and 100-percent airconditioned classrooms.

The project commenced in 2019 with OPC undertaking the construction and providing all the equipment.  Local workers were hired to generate positive social impact by creating employment opportunities for Puerto Cortés and Honduras.  OPC will also maintain the facilities’ air conditioning system and painting until the end of its concession.

“OPC applied the best international practices in the construction of the school’s new facilities.  The building was designed with all the adaptability requirements set forth, both in the law for persons with disabilities and the unique needs of the students in the center,” explained Meyvi Castañeda, OPC Corporate Social Responsibility Manager.

Since the start of its operations in February 2014, OPC has committed to support shared value actions as part of the its corporate culture.  The Company has been making valuable contributions to the community in the areas of education, health, and environment, and will continue to pursue its long-term vision of providing opportunities for the people of Puerto Cortés.

OPC hopes to improve the quality of education for the children in the municipalities of Puerto Cortés, Omoa and Choloma with the delivery of the new facility in September.
