VICT to expand Automatic Stacking Crane fleet

Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) has placed an order for six new Automatic Stacking Cranes with Kalmar as part of its capacity expansion program at Webb Dock East in the Port of Melbourne.

Scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2023, the order will expand VICT’s Automatic Stacking Crane fleet to 26.  The equipment will be turned over to VICT fully assembled and tested to ensure rapid and smooth integration into the terminal’s automated operations.

“Kalmar solutions form the backbone of our operations at Webb Dock East.  The yard capacity expansion and the new automatic stacking cranes will allow us to increase the productivity of our operations to meet the growing customer demand on both quay and landside.  The additional storage blocks will also add resiliency, allowing for improved planned maintenance, minimizing disruption to our stakeholders,” explains Jon Wheeler, VICT Chief Operating Officer.

VICT’s automated operation is powered by Kalmar One Automation System, which is a complete end-to-end system that combines Kalmar automated equipment along with a pre-integrated and test solution. Currently, VICT’s OneTerminal deployment is comprised of the recently upgraded Navis N4 Terminal Operating System, a Kalmar Automatic Stacking Crane System with 20 automatic stacking cranes, 11 Kalmar AutoShuttles and the Kalmar Automated Truck Handling System.

VICT also placed an order for six new Kalmar AutoShuttles earlier this year, which would increase the existing fleet to 17 units. The additional AutoShuttles will be delivered by yearend.

Kalmar is also responsible for the maintenance and support of VICT’s automated container handling software and related technical support. Last year, VICT signed a three-year Kalmar Parts Care agreement that covers the availability of Kalmar genuine spare parts for the terminal’s Kalmar equipment fleet.

“We are excited to continue our long-term collaboration with VICT and help them gain the maximum benefit from their automated solutions.  Our availability to deliver fully erected and tested machines will ensure that the customer can start to leverage their new solutions faster without disrupting ongoing operations,” said Daniel Ho, Kalmar Vice President, Sales, Asia-Pacific.

VICT is the only terminal in Melbourne capable of handling the largest box ships.  The terminal’s efficient operation has been delivering truck turnaround times of under 35 minutes.
