Sustainability Champs honored at 2nd Edify Awards


 

International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) reaffirmed its ESG commitment by honoring its Global Sustainability Champions at the Edify Awards 2023 held on August 11. Now on its second year, the Edify Awards was made a part of ICTSI’s First Sustainability Summit, which is designed to raise ESG awareness and encourage active participation across the organization.

Taking the top honors were Nathan Clarke, vice president and head of Global Engineering - Infrastructure & Project Management, who bagged the Best Global Sustainability Champion award; and Arthur De Jonge, Regional TAM director of Global Engineering - Equipment Maintenance, who emerged as the Most Improved Global Sustainability Champion. 

Mr. De Jonge’s efforts to streamline the environmental reporting of business units to Corporate bested efforts from other nominees for the Most Improved Global Sustainability Champion award. Also nominated for the same category were Atty. Carmeline Viniegra of Global Legal, Cristina Nicanor of Global HSSE, and Zara Canlas of Global HR. 

On the other hand, Mr. Clarke’s role in improving ICTSI’s climate reporting and spearheading the Climate Change Action Initiative earned him the Best Global Sustainability Champion award. He bested Allan Almero of Global Controllership, Arnie Tablante of Global Treasury, Camille Martinez of Global Procurement, and Marvin Nalica of Global HSSE for this year’s honors. 

Aside from these two categories, the Company also recognized Kum Chai Shin, Global Director – Information Security, with the Exemplary Global Sustainability Champion Award, citing her dedication and active role in sustainability reporting. Ms. Shin was also named as the Best Global Sustainability Champion during the inaugural Edify Awards last year.

The finalists for the Best Terminal Environmental, Social and Governance Initiatives were also named. Nominated under the Best Environmental Initiatives category were CGSA for their carbon negative initiative through carbon capturing; CMSA for their carbon neutrality certification; OPC for their simulator project for spreader and hook test that contributed fuel savings; and TSSA for their various biodiversity efforts, which include their support to seahorse conservation and their Wildlife Rescue Plan.

Nominated for the Best Social Initiatives were BICT’s assistance to homeless elderly in Georgia, MICT’s road safety program, RBT’s safety and risk prevention initiative through an extender innovation, SPIA’s empowerment initiative for female port workers, and SPICT’s and MITL’s center for excellence and transformational leadership program. 

Finally, nominated for the Best Governance Initiatives were CGSA for their mobile application for customers, CMSA for their Ethics Line to prevent unacceptable business practices, and MICT for their implementation of vendor-managed catalogue (VMC) developed by the Global Procurement. 

The winners for the best terminal initiatives will be announced during the Chairman’s Cup awarding ceremony in March next year. 

The Edify Awards is the culmination of all internal stakeholders’ contributions in sustainability reporting for the past year. 

Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta III (ret.), Corporate Governance and ESG Committee chairman, in his keynote message, enjoined everyone to further embed the culture of sustainability in the company’s day-to-day operations. Simiao You from the UN Global Compact and Katrina F. Francisco from EY Philippines gave an overview of the pressing issues on sustainability and the concept of materiality and how it affects the company.

Organized by the ESG Reporting Team (ESG Rep) composed of Investor Relations, Legal and Public Relations departments, the Edify Awards also marks the start of the Group’s 2023 sustainability reporting cycle. The next report will cover all the organic operating terminals in the ICTSI Group.
