Running the extra mile, MICT employee conquers ultramarathon

Jhon Ronald “Ron” Rodriguez, an assistant manager of the Information Technology Systems and Services Department at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), achieved a remarkable feat by completing his first Bataan Death March 102-kilometer (BDM102K) marathon.

Ron finished the 13th edition of BDM102K in just under 15 hours, setting a new personal best with 14:46:56. His previous record was 17:42:45 in a 104-kilometer run from Lucban to Antipolo.

“The anticipation was a mix of excitement and nervousness as it was my first time to participate in a BDM event, which features a challenging uphill stretch in the initial six kilometers and added intensity upon reaching Lubao, Pampanga,” explained Ron.

Ron started his rigorous training regimen in January, which comprised weekday sessions and extended weekend runs. He also dedicated extra time to heat and endurance training during weeknights, after-office hours, and on weekend afternoons.

At 36 years old, he has been actively running since 2011 while continuing to be an integral part of the MICT for the past nine years.

Describing his motivation to continue forward with running, Ron says “perseverance is the key. In the face of every hardship, trial and difficulty, there is always light and hope. You can overcome fatigue, eventually. Success is sweet if you worked hard for it.”
