Puerto Cortés ranks 1st among CA-4 and Belize ports

Puerto Cortés continues to strengthen its position as a benchmark for port efficiency in Central America, maintaining the top spot in the CA-4 region and Belize according to official data from the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2020-2024. The report, prepared by the World Bank S&P, analyzes ports based on the time ships spend in port, with Puerto Cortés as a standout in operational competitiveness.
Puerto Cortés is one of the ports that maintained the most stable performance despite global disruptions such as the pandemic, the Red Sea crisis, and water restrictions in the Panama Canal, which affected many ports in 2024.
The CPPI’s performance and historical trend analysis show that from 2020 to 2024, Puerto Cortés maintained a stable and positive trajectory, moving from fourth place in the region in 2023 to second in Central America, while holding the top position among the CA-4 (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua) and Belize ports.
Unlike other ports in the region, Puerto Cortés has not experienced sharp declines, reflecting sustained efficiency that provides a clear competitive advantage amid the volatility affecting other ports.
In the regional comparison, Puerto Limón in Costa Rica ranked highest in Central America in 2024 (CPPI 47, global rank 66), followed by Puerto Cortés (CPPI 22, global rank 110) and Puerto Barrios in Guatemala (CPPI 12, rank 145). In contrast, other key ports recorded significant setbacks, showing weaker performance.
Reaching 110th place globally in 2024 and consolidating its position as the second-best port in Central America confirms Puerto Cortés’ stability and competitiveness. Its consistent efficiency over time demonstrates resilience and reliability compared to other reference ports in the region, reaffirming its strategic role as a trusted logistics partmner for regional and global trade.
