On 17 August, ICTSI South Pacific completed training the engineering team of Visayas Container Terminal (VCT) on mobile harbor crane (MHC) maintenance and repair under the former’s Center of Excellence program.
The training marks a full-circle moment for ICTSI South Pacific, which benefitted from the training conducted by Filipino port equipment operators from Manila International Container Terminal six years ago. This time, Filipinos returned to Papua New Guinea to learn from the locals they once mentored.
George Gware, ICTSI South Pacific chief operations officer, acknowledged the benefits ICTSI South Pacific received from the comprehensive training program of the ICTSI Global Academy. Mr. Gware expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back by contributing to the development of others through ICTSI South Pacific’s own training initiatives.
The comprehensive three-phase training program helped the VCT engineering team gain insights on MHC operations, safety protocols and technical maintenance. The training was held at both Motukea International Terminal in Port Moresby and South Pacific International Container Terminal in Lae.
VCT, which began commercial operations in April, is set to receive its own MHCs in early September.
ICTSI South Pacific’s Center of Excellence Training Program was recently recognized as the 2023 Best ESG Initiative for Social Award during the ICTSI Group’s second Sustainability Summit last July.
