CGSA sets new standard for port efficiency

Contecon Guayaquil (CGSA), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) Ecuadorian business unit operating the multipurpose terminal in the Port of Guayaquil, has set a new industry benchmark by achieving an average truck turnaround time of less than 27 minutes. This further illustrates CGSA’s efficiency and lends to its position as the leading port operation in Ecuador.  It also demonstrates the impact of well-planned and optimized operational workflows.

Seaports play a vital role in facilitating the transport of commodities on the international scale. It is therefore crucial for terminals around the world to implement efficient workflows to boost their capacities. From docking to delivery, every phase is critical; greater operational efficiency translates to increased productivity, reduced expenses and improved overall port performance.

CGSA’s latest achievement is the result of a meticulously implemented master plan, which includes an exhaustive study to optimize the flow of trucks in and out of the terminal, as well as the reorganization of the container yards. Complementing these improvements are robust security protocols, as well as the separation of the operational and administrative areas.

CGSA also modified the entry and exit processes for trucks and designated a large, secure pre-gate area with a capacity for 250 trucks. This area ensures the protection and comfort of truckers, being fully enclosed and equipped with security measures, lighting, surveillance cameras, restrooms and dedicated office facilities.

This new system ensures the constant flow of trucks from the entrance gates to the strategically placed scanners, which help avoid congestion. Currently, the terminal operates three non-intrusive inspection equipment capable of scanning 300 vehicles per hour.

Completed in January this year, the system not only benefits CGSA as Guayaquil’s main port, but also offers significant advantages for the foreign trade value chain. The enhanced operational efficiency resulting from the project’s implementation positively impacts exporting and importing companies by reducing logistics costs and improving competitiveness. Furthermore, the new system strengthens business relationships and cements the port’s status as a strategic partner in the sector by ensuring greater cargo visibility, integrity and timeliness.

These developments reaffirm Contecon Guayaquil’s commitment to providing first-class port services and to boosting efficiency and productivity across Ecuador’s logistics chain.
