The ASTOM Summit 2024, held from 7 to 9 November in Manzanillo, brought together key players in Mexico’s import-export sector, shipping lines and terminal operators to discuss the challenges posed by nearshoring and the increasing demand for maritime foreign trade in Mexico. The event was organized by the Association of Manzanillo Terminals and Operators (ASTOM), which is chaired by José Antonio Contreras, Contecon Manzanillo chief executive officer.

With the Port of Manzanillo handling over 40 percent of the country’s container volume and serving as Mexico’s gateway for Asian trade, Mr. Contreras highlighted the recent developments achieved in cooperation with the National Customs Agency. These include the rollout of the early modulation system and new scanners for Customs inspection, the 24-hour schedule for exports, and extended hours for imports.

Key infrastructure advancements were also highlighted, including the new north elevated access to alleviate traffic congestion, and upcoming projects to improve road access and expand the port towards the Cuyutlán Lagoon. These initiatives align with the vision of making Manzanillo the center of development for western Mexico.

Some of the notable attendees included Admiral Mario Alberto Gasque Peña, Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA) head; Colima Governor Indira Vizcaíno; and Manzanillo Mayor Rosa María Bayardo. Over 100 participants exchanged insights to enhance operational and logistical efficiency.

ASTOM Summit 2024 was sponsored by Santander Bank, Grupo Indi, Grupo Tracsa, Beluga Logística, and Porsche. It also featured prominent companies such as Pirelli, Beluga, MSC, CMA-CGM, Pacific International Lines, Wan Hai Lines, Vento, Grupo Charly, Samsung, Araucomex, Costco and Interteam, among others.
