BGT, GCPI launch tree-planting initiative

Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT) and the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) launched a tree-planting initiative at the Port of Umm Qasr in late 2025 to support local environmental efforts.

BGT volunteers planted more than 200 native trees, forming green buffers around the port. The trees are intended to help absorb air pollution and reduce the impact of desert dust on port equipment. To support growth in Basra’s extreme climate, where temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius, BGT set up a long-term plan to maintain and water the trees.
